The film was McQueen's final role before his death in November 1980 at age 50. The cast also features Eli Wallach (The Magnificent Seven), Ben Johnson (The Getaway), Kathryn Harrold (Raw Deal), LeVar Burton (Roots TV series), and Richard Venture (Being There). This was the last theatrical film made by director Buzz Kulik (Villa Rides). Filming began September 1979, McQueen reportedly did a lot of directing on set at this point. The film opened August 1, 1980, in 425 theatres in the United States and Canada. McQueen attended the premiere but died 13 weeks later.
