Australian One Sheet Poster with Tom Jung Artwork. The Lord of the Rings is a 1978 (released in Australia in 1980) animated dark fantasy adventure film directed by Ralph Bakshi. It is an adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's high fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring (1954) and the first half of The Two Towers (1954). The film features the voices of William Squire (Callan), John Hurt (Harry Potter), Michael Graham Cox (Cry Freedom), and Anthony Daniels (Star Wars). Ralph Bakshi encountered Tolkien's writing early in his career. He had made several attempts to produce The Lord of the Rings as an animated film before producer Saul Zaentz and distributor United Artists provided funding. The film is notable for its extensive use of rotoscoping, a technique in which scenes are first shot in live action, then traced onto animation cells. It uses a hybrid of traditional cell animation and rotoscoped live action footage. Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings was a financial success. It won a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. It was nominated for The Saturn Awards for Best Fantasy Film. Leonard Rosenman's score was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Motion Picture Score and Bakshi won a Golden Gryphon award for the film at the Giffoni Film Festival. Finally this film influenced Peter Jackson's trilogy, as detailed in the DVD extras of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
