USA Insert Poster art by Frank McCarthy.Raid on Rommel is an American movie in Technicolor from 1971, directed by Henry Hathaway and set in North Africa 1942 during the Second World War. It was filmed in just over three weeks in July 1970. Director Henry Hathaway had, 20 years previously, directed another film featuring Erwin Rommel, The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951). This film stars Richard Burton (The Desert Rats) as a German speaking British commando attempting to destroy German gun emplacements in Tobruk. Burton uses former British POWs, some dressed in German uniforms, to fulfill a secret sabotage mission inside German-captured Tobruk. Robert Stack was originally cast in Burton’s role. Raid On Rommel enjoyed a brief theatrical run and thus original cinema memorabilia is now in short supply.
