Van Dyke (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award) California historical romantic melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; it included a recreation of the famous San Francisco earthquake and fire!; "They were born to fall in love!") starring Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, Spencer Tracy (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Jack Holt, and Ted Healy (most famous as the person who started The Three Stooges; they were first billed as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; he let them go on their own, hiring replacement "Stooges", but that did not work out well at all!)AND Waterloo Bridge, the 1940 Mervyn LeRoy World War II (WWII) military romantic tearjerker melodrama (based on the play by Robert E. Sherwood; about a World War I soldiers whose sweetheart descends into a wretched life after she hears he was killed in the war, but he wasn't killed, and he finds her years later) starring Vivien Leigh, Robert Taylor, Lucile Watson, Virginia Field, Maria Ouspenskaya, and C. Aubrey Smith. Note that there was an earlier version of this movie under the same title made in 1931 by James Whale, and starring Mae Clarke, with Bette Davis in a small role.
